Tivoli

Tivoli's story begins in 1843.
The founder, Georg Carstensen, got Christian VIII's consent in 1841. The following year we managed to get permission to build an amusement park in Copenhagen glacis, the area just outside the ramparts. First May 1843 began construction on the plot and 15 August Tivoli opened its gates.
Tivoli was an instant success. 175,000 guests visited Tivoli in the first, short season. One of the guests were Hans Andersen, who came on the last night of the season, 11 October. Here he was inspired to describe the emperor's garden in it in his diary calls "my Chinese fairy tale" The Nightingale.
Today, Tivoli nearly 4 million guests each. year divided into three seasons: summer (3 million. guests), Halloween in Tivoli Gardens (250,000 visitors), and Christmas in Tivoli (9 million. guests).
In the menu above you will find several articles on important parts of Tivoli's history and traditions.

THE Little Mermaid

is a statue of a mermaid in Langelinie, Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. Based on the fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen, the small and unimposing statue (with a height of 1.25 metres is a Copenhagen icon and a major tourist attraction.
The statue was commissioned in 1909 by Carl Jacobsen, son of the founder of Carlsberg, who had been fascinated by a ballet about the fairytale in Copenhagen's Royal Theatre and asked the primaballerina, Ellen Price, to model for the statue. The sculptor Edvard Eriksen created the bronze statue, which was unveiled on 23 August 1913. The statue's head was modelled after Price, but as the ballerina did not agree to model in the nude, the sculptor's wife, Eline Eriksen, was used for the body.
